Project title: International Atmospheric Research over the Adriatic
Project summary: The economic and scientific goal of the project is creating and strengthening the international group of researchers that will study fluid dynamics over the Adriatic in Croatia. As the first step towards realization of the project I have already embarked on organizing The First Split Workshop in Atmospheric Physics and Oceanography where the best scientists will hold lectures on a Ph.D. level and discuss the plans for our future research project. Through the proposed visits I will strengthen that group and make necessary preparations for our future joint international project.Local processes influence the accuracy of weather forecast. It is my goal to get a better understanding of local processes over the Adriatic connected to local convection. In particular the dependence between precipitation rate and saturation fraction that has not been studied in middle latitudes will be investigated.The full model for equatorial convectively coupled waves will be finished and tested in the laboratory of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. It is the last step in work that has been going on for eight years and that has so far led to many discoveries regarding Madden-Julian oscillation, Kelvin waves as well as to better understanding of local convection.
Hrvatski sažetak: Ekonomski i znanstveni cilj ovog projekta je stvaranje i jačanjegrupe međunarodnih istraživača koja će proučavati dinamiku fluida nad Jadranom. Kao prvi korak ka realizaciji ove ideje već sam organizirala Prvu splitsku radionicu iz atmosferske fizike I oceanografije na kojoj će najbolji znanstvenici predavati na doktorskoj razini i diskutirati o planovima za naš budući istraživački projekt. Kroz predložene posjete ojačat ću ovu grupu stručnjaka i obaviti nužne korake za budući zajednički međunarodni projekt. Lokalni procesi utječu na točnost prognoze vremena. Moj cilj je poboljšati razumijevanje lokalnih procesa na Jadranu povezanih s lokalnom konvekcijom. Posebice ću proučavati ovisnost količine padalina o koeficientu saturacije koja još nije proučena u umjerenim širinama. Cjelokupan model za ekvatorijalne valove povezane s konvekcijom će biti dovršen i testiran u laboratoriju New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology-a. Ovo je zadnja faza istraživanja koje traje već osam godina i koje je dosad dovelo do više otkrića povezanih s Madden-Julian oscilacijom, Kelvinovim valovima kao i do boljeg razumijevanja lokalne konvekcije.
