Project title: Animal Model for Studying the Effects of Exercise on Cardiac Function
Project summary: Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a syndrome where symptoms of shortness of breath and fatigue stem from impaired ability of the heart to work as a pump. The most common cause of the disease is myocardial infarction and resulting damage to the cardiac muscle. CHF is one of the most prevalent pathological conditions in general population, severely limiting the quality of life. Although physical activity was traditionally restricted in patients suffering from CHF, recent evidence indicated that specific forms of exercise may improve cardiac function and enhance the prospects of survival. In order to decipher protective actions of exercise and compare the efficacy of different training regimens with the goal of their successful clinical application, the use of an animal model is essential. Therefore, a short-term visit is proposed to an internationally established scientific group that routinely uses animal models of CHF and exercise. Besides acquiring the know-how and the skill required for establishing the complementary research operation at the domicile institution, the visit will set the foundation for future collaboration. Moreover, introduction of the technique not-existing in Croatia will enable other Croatian scientist to use the same approach for their research and enhance the prospect for further national collaboration.
