Scientific output

A frequent topic of discussion within scientific community is how to measure scientific output in ways that effectively capture scientific impact. The purpose of the following statistics is not to measure scientific impact, but immediate output. Within all UKF programs a total of 91 scientific and technological projects were financed, but for the purpose of this statistics only medium scale projects within the Research Cooperability and Young Researchers Programs that are completed or have passed half time of the project implementation period are calculated, in total 39 projects.

Scientific output of UKF projects was measured by peer-reviewed publications and is presented below:
312 scientific publications include 1 article in 'Journal of the American Chemical Society' (IF 8.585), 1 article in 'Chemical Reviews' (IF 33.0), 2 articles in ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA' (IF 9.5), 1 article in ‘the American Journal of Psychiatry’ (IF 12.5), 1 article in ‘Public Library of Science Pathogens’ (IF 9.709), 1 article in  ‘Molecular & Cellular Proteomics’ (IF 8.354), 1 article and a commentary in 'Science' (IF 29.7), 1 article in „Nature Reviews Genetics“  (IF 32.75) and 3 articles and a commentary in 'Nature' (IF 36.0).

177 are articles in peer-reviewed publications (of which 145 with IF), 26 books/book chapters and also 97 conference abstracts. The number of stated conference abstracts is most probably higher because not all project leaders listed them as published papers.

SCIENTIFIC OUTPUT AS MEASURED BY THE NUMBER OF SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS

OVERVIEW OF THE PEER-REVIEW PUBLICATIONS QUALITY MEASURED BY THE IMPACT FACTOR PER EACH RESEARCH AREA:

We have listed the number of articles published in peer-reviewed journals with an Impact Factor (IF) as one of the measures of the relative importance of a journal, individual article or scientist to science and social science literature and research.

1. Natural sciences - These projects published as many as 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals:

Physics – from 20 articles published in peer-reviewed journals 15 are published in journals with IF:
  • 12 articles in journals with IF<3.5
  • 3 in journals with IF 3.5-7.5.
Chemistry – from 13 articles published in peer-reviewed journals 12 are published in journals with IF:
  • 5 articles published in journals with IF<2
  • 5 articles in journals with IF 2 - 4.2,
  • 1 in journal with IF 8.585
  • 1 article in 'Chemical Reviews' with IF of 33.0.
Biology all 22 articles are published in peer-reviewed journals with IF
  • 17 in journals with IF<5.5
  • 2 articles in journals with IF 9-10
  • 1 article is published in 'Science' - the commentary (IF 29.7), 1 in 'Nature' - the article and commentary (IF 36.0) and 1 in ‘Nature Reviews Genetics’ (IF 32.75)

2. Technical sciences – out of 33 articles published in peer-reviewed journals by 10 projects, 18 are in journals with IF and 9 of them are from the Chemical engineering field:
  • 5 with IF 1.4-3.5
  • 4 in journals with IF 4.3-6.5

Other projects from the Technical sciences division also published as many as 62 conference abstracts and technical reports.

3. Biomedical sciences - 12 projects produced 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 7 books/book chapters. 70 articles of 80 are published in journals with IF
  • 51 articles in journals with IF<4.6
  • 16 articles in journals with IF 5-12.5
  • 1 article is published in 'Science' (IF 29.7) and 2 in 'Nature' (IF 36.0).
Researchers from this field also reported 34 conference abstracts.

4. Biotechnical sciences – no articles published so far

5. Social sciences – 1 project from Kinesiology discipline produced 4 articles in peer-reviewed journals with IF 1.5-3.3.
