Project title: Adsorption of Ions at Teflon Surfaces
Project summary: Interfacial charging properties of inert interfaces (air/water, Teflon/water, etc.) are currently under hot debate. Ions adsorption at hydrophobic surfaces affects many processes in nature and industry. Thus ions adsorption, especially that of radioactive ions (e.g. Am(III), Cm(III)), at trace levels on walls of test tubes (e.g. Teflon, other synthetic material) in laboratory work is experimental problem. So far container materials are chosen based on trial and error, due to the lack of understanding of ion binding to such “inert” surfaces. The aim of this project is to study this process from a fundamental point of view. Adsorption of relevant ions onto Teflon will be studied in order to gain knowledge about ion surface concentrations at hydrophobic surface/water interfaces as a function of pH and electrolyte concentration, but also to reinforce knowledge about the structure of the adsorbed layer and the factors influencing the bare surface properties. Collaboration with Karlsruhe Institute for Technology will enable Croatian group access to the state-of-the-art spectroscopic methods for interface characterization not avaiable in Croatia. In this way, considerable expertise of Croatian group in investigation of interfacial phenomena will be broadened enabling establishement of long term collaboration and integration of Croatian scientists into European Research Area.
